A Conversation with a Former Student

Kid: Blake, how did people write a research papers before the Wikipedia or Google?

Blake: It was difficult. We had to physically go to the library and find this thing called a card catalog.

Kid: Is that like a search engine?

Blake: Well…yeah, only it’s the search and you’re the engine.

  • Not only that, but there were specific hours of operation, and we used this thing called a typewriter. We had to physically load the individual sheets of paper, pay attention to the end of the carriage, hit the return lever to type the next line, and change typewriter ribbons. Oh, and use dictionaries to check to make sure we spelled words correctly.

  • Oh wow, that’s more than I can handle :) I so so grateful I never had to use a typewriter.
