Nebulous Good News and another Batch of Quotes for Spellwright
It’s a blustery late spring day here, hopefully a good one for starting new things. I’m putting the final touches for a scene-by-scene outline for SPELLWRIGHT’S sequel, SPELLBOUND. That means, at long last, it’s time to start studying for the US Medical Licensing Exam. I did not get my accommodations. So when I take this test, it will be the first time since I was six that I’ll take a test without acknowledgment of my disability. I’m boiling with so many different emotions: hope that I can pull it off, fear that I can’t, excitement to pull the medical knowledge together, depression about the number of hours I’ll be spending in the library, and lots of revenant thoughts from that boy who rode the short buss to school.
But offsetting this daunting next phase of my quest to become a physician is some wonderful news. I can’t report all of it just yet until things are…“contractually solid,” shall we say. But for now let’s say for now that my financial stability (such as it is) is looking much more stable for next year.
Some good news that I can share comes in another wave of blurbs for SPELLWRIGHT. Again I am greatful for and humbled by them all. Tad Williams has influenced every step of my writing career. Like I did with Rob Hobb’s work, I used to sneak Tad’s fantasies into my special ed study hall to teach myself to read. Another local to these parts, Tad has also been a basketball coach, writing mentor, and good friend. Piers Anthony, of course, needs no introduction. I was honored that he read the manuscript we sent him. Kevin J. Anderson is a beloved author who is a powerhouse in our genre and has written of many different worlds, always at a thrilling pace with clear prose. Blake Charlton, has not only invented a fascinating world and peopled it with realistic people and wonderful, grisly monsters, but he has created one of the few truly original magical systems we’ve seen in fantasy fiction. The lucid complexity of the magic reminds me of Jack Vance, which is high praise indeed. I’m fascinated to see what happens next and will be following every word with the absorption of an apprentice spellwright. You will be, too.

A clever conceit well executed adds a flair of originality to this wizard-in-training fantasy. A spellcaster who can’t spell — in both senses of the word! Fast-paced and well-written, SPELLWRIGHT is an enjoyable read.

After all this time, it must feel good to have these tangible signs of your book finding the store shelves. Congrats, Blake. It will have been a long journey, no?

The creative juices are flowing, fortunately, albeit with audio fiction work. Nonetheless, it is best that they flow with something. I’m build like a machine that has to keep running or it falls apart. Alas, I came with no warranty.

ha. i like that. you should write a short about the ability to by a warranty on life. i could certainly use one. i’m looking forward to seeing the progress with the audio Hoad’s Grim when i escape this exam.
